Day 1
To the Tail
Day 2
A Skyway and a Loop
Day 3
Waffle to Wigwam
|
I drove an hour for breakfast, found some curves I wasn't expecting, then
ended the day in the glow of a campfire.
With a Moon Pie and coffee to start my day, I drove the Cherohala Skyway
then rode under and over and over and under a tall trestle.
An ultra early start gave me time to visit one new and several old
roadside attractions before driving -- quite sedately -- the Tail of the
Dragon.
This trip is pretty spontaneous and that might be an indication that I
am at least starting to return to a pre-COVID mindset. It was just over a
week ago that an American Road Magazine Facebook post caught my eye. I was
intrigued by an image (taken from this
postcard) of train rails circling a mountain. When I learned that the
unusual layout was less than 300 miles from my home and still in use as a
tourist attraction, it struck me as something I should do. The train runs
only on weekends, and things happening closer to home kept me from booking
the very next outing but I only missed by one. I've got a ticket to ride
next Sunday and have paired the
Hiwassee Loop with some historic lodging and wiggly
highways.
