I made it home using a scenic road with a river view and a Butt shake on
the side.
A morning cave visit was spontaneous but my afternoon stop had been
planned for a long time. Three weeks in advance may seem like overkill in
arranging to see a movie, but the truth is I've been waiting to see the
greatest movie ever made on the big screen for most of my life.
Starting with a classic cafe and ending with a special brewery is enough
to guarantee a good day and this one had a world-class tourist trap, a
motel restoration with momentum, and a football field-sized art display in
between.
A sign dedication with musical accompaniment, two car shows, two classic
motels, a cop car on a stick and another behind a sign, ice-cold
watermelon, and a backyard movie. I don't know how to classify it but I
sure enjoyed it.
I took pictures as we learned about Amazons, postcards, and marketing then
let the entire awards banquet go by without a single snap. Others, I
believe sure, were less lazy.
We toured by foot, bus, and trolley before getting trivial.
I drove the Kansas route of the Jefferson Highway from Kansas City to
Joplin before looping back to Pittsburg for the conference.
Today's lone giant and single museum were separated by a fair amount of
driving in a more than fair amount of rain.
I rolled through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois as I went from grits to
custard with a little National Road along the way.
Although I never did get around to updating this page, the 2021 JHA
Conference didn't happen either. Because Pittsburg, Kansas, had already
been announced as the conference site for 2022, dates for a conference in
Mason City, Iowa, got shoved out two years to 2023. COVID-19 has not
completely disappeared but vaccines have made gatherings significantly
less dangerous. The Lincoln Highway Association has announced that their
2022 conference will also also be a reality. I plan to attend that as
well.
My plans for attending the conference in Mason City never did fully form.
I am much further along with plans for the Pittsburg gathering. When I
drove the full route in 2018, I opted to stay on the Missouri side of the
split at Kansas City. Following the Kansas side of that split is the key
part of the route for this trip. I do have that plotted along with
securing motel reservations for the nights immediately before and after.
The coronavirus pandemic has had Ohio bars and restaurants closed since
March 15 and the whole state has been under a "stay at home" order since
March 23. Many other states have similar precautions in place putting
travel of any sort somewhere between forbidden and very inconvenient. In
early April, the Lincoln Highway Association announced a one year
postponement of their conference planned for the last half of June so it
wasn't a big surprise when the Jefferson Highway Association's Board of
Directors voted to not go forward with their conference scheduled for the
first part of June. Following the vote, an announcement was made on April
16 that this conference would also be moved out a year. I don't know if
I've ever had a trip planned this far in advance before.
The Jefferson Highway Association's ninth annual conference will be in
Mason City, Iowa, during the first week of June. That's a change from the
April timeframe of previous conferences. I understand the change was made
to accommodate some specific Mason City activities but it will also reduce
the chance of foul weather in the more northerly location.
