We left Pennsylvania headed for Iowa and made it as far as Huron, Ohio.
Along the way, we made stops at a couple of art installations made of cast
off materials and treated ourselves to some frozen custard.
The day started at a resort town with a possibly defunct amusement park
and ended in a resort town where where everything is going strong. In
between we visited a bunch of fish, a house from a movie, and an
incredible market. The day and the conference ended with a banquet in a
former train station.
We followed a day of presentations with visits to two local hot spots.
One was an empty amusement park and the other a decidedly not empty
restaurant.
A bus tour of Erie and points east filled this day to overflowing with a
theater, a bridge, and a museum. And there was pie.
I cruised by car to Erie, PA in time for a boat cruise on the lake to kick
off the conference.
This was initially scheduled for June 6-11 but was quickly moved forward a
week when it was realized that those dates overlapped both the Society for
Industrial Archeology and Jefferson Highway Association conferences. A
conflict still exists between the JHA and SIA conferences but I was spared
a really tough choice between the two conferences I am interested in. The
2023 Society for Commercial Archeology conference will take place May 31
through June 4 in Erie, PA.
