Advertising a pirate bar with seafood, Italian, and NTN makes a place
sound eclectic. The Jolly Roger is definitely that. And it's sprawling,
too. The NTN part is important. It's what brought me here last night.
Back home in Cincinnati, I typically play Buzztime NTN trivia with friends
on Tuesdays. During one of yesterday's ferry rides, I checked to see if
there were any games in the area. Finding this place two miles from my
hotel made hitting it for dinner a no-brainer. I played a few rounds of
trivia, did serious damage to the shrimp
parmesan, and put a barely noticeable dent in the spaghetti next to
it.
This morning I head down the street to what I thought was a promising
place for breakfast. Turns out it only looked promising and was actually
closed for the season. As I pondered my options in the empty parking lot,
I remembered signs at Jolly Roger touting breakfast. And that's how I
ended up here taking most of these pictures and eating my second
consecutive oversized meal. This time it was "pier style"
(scrambled together) sausage and eggs. Betcha
can guess how the restrooms are labeled.

After breakfast, I headed a few miles north to check out some lesser known
aviation monuments. Just like some of the earliest monuments at the Wright
Brothers National Memorial, this one at 3839-3857 Moor Shore Road in Kitty
Hawk was erected for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first flight.

The Monument to a Century of Flight was erected an
appropriate amount of time later. The columns are filled with significant
events from that first century. I've included the first one that I
personally remember.

I knew in advance that the
Currituck
Beach Lighthouse was closed for the winter. As I had with the Hatteras
lighthouse, I felt both relieved and disappointed about the closing but I
tilted toward the disappointed side after I saw it. Its unpainted brick
makes it look quite classy. I'd love to look inside.

If you're looking to drink a beer, eat a meal, and take some sausages home
for tomorrow, then the Weeping Radish is the place for you. I only did the
first two but my meal included some fine kielbasa from the back of the
house. That's Doppleboch Christmas Bier in the glass.
