Snappy Lunch,
in Andy Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy, opens at 6:00 AM every day but
Sunday and is closed by 2:00. I've been here twice and was just a little
too late on both occasions. Mount Airy isn't exactly on my planned US-64
route, but once I saw approximately where yesterday was going to end, I
picked a motel on a line between Charlotte (dinner) and Mount Airy
(breakfast). I made it long before closing and well before they start
serving their famous pork chop sandwich. I wasn't terribly upset about
that since the chili covered concoction isn't the sort of thing I
generally go looking for and I'd been undecided about ordering one.
This is a very busy place. I grabbed the picture of the cook at work
during the one time -- and it was mere seconds -- that the area between me
and that counter was clear. My breakfast might
not be the most photogenic but it was quite good, reasonably priced, and
represented an accomplishment for me. The service and other customers were
friendly to the max. Before leaving, I snapped a picture of the only area
that wasn't filled with people to show it filled with furniture just like
my grandmother had.

The happy couple dressed in red was across the street from Snappy Lunch,
the classic wall sign is just up the street, and the other happy couple is
around the corner.

Many miles back, I'd driven by a collapsing farm house that sat below the
road and would have undoubtedly supplied some great pictures. Somewhat
later, I passed up a horses and weathered barn photo-op. I actually drove
a little beyond this lonely and lovely wreath before convincing myself
that the soulless driving had to stop.

US-64 skirts the southern edge of Lake Lure where attractive homes can be
seen, but not easily photographed, through the trees. A clear shot of the
lake can be had at Lake Lure Beach which was devoid of both trees and
tourists covered in oil.

A cluster of parked cars marked my arrival at the Village of Chimney Rock
at Chimney Rock State Park. I'm sorry about all the glare
in the third picture but it's the only one I have of the front of
Hickory Nut
Gorge Brewing. Good thing I have better ones of the inside and the
other side.
