When I finally ventured forth from the motel, I headed straight to
Worlds Fair
Park for the third time. My first visit was in 1982 when an actual
world's fair filled the space. I had all three kids with me that time. All
the walking wore out five year old Megan and carrying Megan wore out me.
The two of us ended up parked on a bench while the two boys ran around
getting their passports stamped which is something they've spent a fair
amount of time doing since then, too. The second time was
ten years ago when I
met a friend here. We made it into the sphere itself which had been
restored after being
a
Simpsons joke. I'm modeling a Christmas present in the fourth picture.
My grandson thought my mustache was getting a little too gray so he got me
a shiny black one. Thanks, Wes. Looks pretty good, eh?
I spent Sunday night in Cleveland, TN, and ate at a regional chain
restaurant. Sitting at the bar, I had great conversations with the people
on both sides of me. I got "must do" recommendations on a
Knoxville restaurant called Copper Kettle. I assumed it would be closed on
Christmas so stated my intentions of eating there Christmas Eve. When I
got serious about finding the place, I found that a place called
Copper Cellar
was TripAdvisor's top restaurant and knew it was the one. The big surprise
was learning that it would be open Christmas Day. On arrival, I took a
seat at the empty-until-I-got-there bar and began chatting with Kate. Our
conversation's pace picked up when I learned that she had eaten at Aretha
Frankenstein's for the first time ever -- and loved it -- just a week ago.
I also learned that both Copper Cellar locations and some other
restaurants (including Calhoun's where I ate the night before) are part of
the same operation that owns Smoky Mounting Brewery and all have Smoky Mountain
beers on tap. My learning continued as Kate explained that Copper Cellar
had started as a steak house and that steak remained something of a
speciality. That convinced me to change from the fish offerings I has been
considering and go with a filet. It was delivered with a smile and it was
delicious.
I'd found out yesterday that Schulz Brau Brewing would be open today so that's
where I headed for "dessert". The taps at Schulz Brau are
mounted on a bright surface that makes a pretty decent reflector.
I've had a really good Christmas. Some have no doubt had better, and some
have probably had worse, but I'm betting no one reading this has a
Christmas as bad as the driver of this car I spotted on the way back to
the motel.
I always like to include a little music in my Christmas Day journal. This
year I don't have anything with a distinctly Cincinnati flavor or played
on a weird instrument but I do have something that really fits the trip.
Celebrating 115 years of flight was a big part of this outing. The 100th
anniversary of the end of the Great War was celebrated just over a month
ago. Nothing could be more fitting than a song about my favorite pilot and
his Christmas adventure during that war.
Today's background is that solitary
wreath on a weather beaten barn that I paused to photograph three days
ago.
