Now that I had reached Route 66, I intended to stay there. I went to sleep
thinking of breakfast at Clanton's in Vinita, OK, but fortunately checked
before leaving the motel and learned they were closed December 21-27. The
replacement, also right on the route, was the
Freeway Cafe
with some outstanding French Toast.

We road fans often shake our heads over people being totally unaware of a
historic route that passes right by their front door. Not too long ago,
that was even true for a few Tulsa residents and Historic Route 66 but
probably not now.

At the Blue Whale of Catoosa, all the brush has been cleared
from the Ark although I don't know if there are plans to restore it. The
fellow standing on the whale is a Brazilian now living in Florida. He has
already been to Forty-four states, is working on the remainder, and is now
covering Route 66 in stages.

I have no idea what that Tin Man fronted building in Afton, OK, is but it
virtually begged to have its picture taken. I'm quite familiar with the
other building. It is the former Afton Station where David and Laurel Kane
once had their museum and gift shop. This is the first time I've been here
since it was emptied and the contents auctioned. About all that is left
besides the walls are the stickers on the window but they at least include
my favorite. Good advice there.

The arch, the Coleman Theater, and the Ku-Ku are all in Miami, OK, and I
have photographed all of them before. The Mickey Mantle statue in
Commerce, OK, is new to me.

One or two pictures of the Rainbow Bridge in Kansas is usually enough but
today I felt the need to take one as I approached it, one when I was
beside it, and another just before I crossed it.

These drive-by shots are all from Galena, KS. I think this is my first
time photographing Gearhead Curios and only my second time at the
"sheriff on a stick". I've photographed Cars on the Route
numerous times.

This is exactly where I planned to be tonight although I planned to get
here by a very different route. I would have liked to take a lot more
pictures of the neon on the newly refurbished
Boots Court but
the freezing temperature pushed me inside Room
#9 and Christmas music flowing from a pre-tuned radio.
