US-62 has been a favorite of mine since it caught my attention back in 2004. Seeing that it ran right through Paducah and within about a dozen miles of Lexington, it became my almost automatic choice for today's drive between the two. Less than twenty miles into my drive, I found the 50's Cafe beside my chosen route and stopped in for breakfast. |
|
I had not left Paducah particularly early and after my breakfast stop,
some crude and fairly shaky math indicated that there would not be much
time for stops along the way if I stuck with my expressway shunning plan.
I have driven all of US-62 so my conscious would permit me to skip some of
it but I enjoyed it so much I really didn't want to do that. In the end,
I decided to treat myself to a nice drive and forego the roadside stops
and photo ops.
I did get in a few snaps from the drivers seat that included crossing the Dixie Highway in Elizabethtown and passing the historic Talbot Tavern in Bardstown. When I first drove Kentucky's US-62 in 2004, I described one section with "around every curve there is another curve". That applies to nearly all of US-62 but particularly to Kentucky and those are not scary white-knuckle curves but pleasant, scenic, interesting curves. The last picture is of the approach to the 1932 Jo Blackburn Bridge across the Kentucky River with the 1889 Young's High Bridge in the background. The latter carried trains until 1985. |
|
I switched to US-60 in Versailles which let me get a drive-by shot of the Kentucky Castle where you can stay in a tower suite or live like a grand deluxe king, premier king, or just a regular king. |
|
This room is my home for the next couple of nights at the Campbell House where clothing is optional for horses but fortunately required for humans. My day long prohibition against stopping was justified when I pulled in just minutes ahead of sunset. |
