Today got started, well after sunrise, at
Flo's Route 66 Diner. I believe almost every mention
of this place that I've seen mentions really good biscuits and gravy.
That's not something I wanted this morning, but all that attention did
prompt me to order a biscuit instead of my normal wheat toast. It was
an excellent choice.
It was kind of refreshing seeing Route 66 signs in a restaurant that was actually on Route 66. One was a bit unusual, but still looked familiar. I eventually recalled it being in the background of a photo of friends at a restaurant in Virginia. Another sign puzzled me so I asked my waitress about it, but she didn't know. An online search revealed that the logo identifies the National Wild Turkey Federation. It's use on a US Highway shield just might be a one time thing. |

In Lebanon, MO, I paused briefly at the Munger Moss but it seems its days
as a much loved working motel are over. At least Bob and Ramona still have
their names on a resting spot. Down the street, Glen Wrinkle's name
remains on his old store where a BBQ restaurant now operates.

Not too far from each other, both of these places are moving into their
second lives. At the faux gas station Gary Turner built from is memories
and imagination, his daughter and son in law now greet visitors just as
Gary once did. A few miles beyond, Spencer Station, essentially abandoned
for many years, is now being actively restored.

This is my second visit to the only pump I know of that has its own
Facebook
page. This time I noticed that Whitehead Farm Supply has an "ice cold
pop" sign in the window, so I went inside for a Dr Pepper, and to verify
that there had once again been a big parade when the pump was decorated
for Christmas this year.

I slipped slightly off route to cruise through
Red Oak II.
That's the fountain where Lowell Davis posed for
a photo when we first met.
Yes, that Chevy truck is really cool, but don't ignore the open-air cinema
just behind it. Of course, I wanted to know why the peacocks crossed the
road, but they weren't talking.

By the middle of the day, I'd decided that
Boots Court for it
to end, so here I am. This is my first visit since the new office and
visitors center was opened and my first time meeting manager Janet. As can
be seen in the Christmasy window decorations, the Boots has embraced their
Jefferson Highway connection. It is now an official
JH Tourist Center.

Although I know several people who have enjoyed eating at
Iggy's
Diner, but for some reason I'd never been there. I corrected that
tonight with a patty melt that included
mushrooms. Very good.

The city park is nicely decorated for the holidays, so I snapped a couple
of photos on the way back to the motel.

At the Boots, a lovely green glow, both old and new, awaited me, as did
Room #5.
