As I did on my last day on Oahu, I made sure my last meal was a little special. It's true that I try extra hard to avoid chain restaurants when I'm traveling but there are times when it is just absolutely appropriate.

My first view of the big island. There was a point in my planning where this got dropped from the itinerary but my stepmother, who visited Hawaii with my Dad in 1980, convinced me that would be wrong. "How can you say you've been to the state of Hawaii if you don't go to the island of Hawaii?"

This is my home for the next three days. That view of Reeds Bay isn't directly from my room but it's just a few steps away.
