The
Stoney Creek Hotel is home base for the conference,
and is where I'm staying. Here's my
room.

A reception at a nearby restaurant actually got the conference started
last night, and friendly greetings and conversations continued this
morning. Jefferson Highway Association President Glenn Smith officially
opened the conference at 9:00 He introduced Saint Joseph Mayor Darrell
McMurry who then read a proclamation declaring this Jefferson Highway
Recognition Day in the city.

Before the presentations began, a little time was spent having members
introduce themselves. Earl Hammer's introduction was a little special. He
was born on the Jefferson Highway in 1920 and remembers his dad working to
maintain the section of the highway that passed their house in Rochester
Missouri, a little north of Saint Joseph.

Sarah Elder started things off with "a hundred and ninety years of
Saint Joseph history in half an hour or less". I (and I'm betting
others) learned that a lot more has gone on in this city besides the Pony
Express and the death of Jesse James. Margaret Elaine Justus then spoke on
the history of transportation in Missouri. Carol Ahlgren closed out the
morning by telling us about her research into the roads on Minnesota.
After lunch, David Stearns and Mike Curtis, talked about the Jefferson Highway mapping project. I followed them with a few words about my in process drive along the route. Being nervous about my own little talk almost made me forget to take a picture of David and Mike, but I did manage to grab one as they were wrapping up. |
