I spent last in Kosciusko, Mississippi. I stayed quite close to the
Trace, and just jumped back on and started driving this morning.
Apparently I'm kind of tired of down-the-road shots myself since the
camera was idle until this little dome caught my eye. It's at the edge of
Tupelo on US-278. I figured I'd be able to learn something about it from
the internet but I haven't yet.

At least I had the camera awake to record some of the 33 miles of Natchez
Trace Parkway in Alabama. I had just taken the picture of the bridge over
the Tennessee River when the two motorcycles roared past. I naturally
assumed they were traveling together but one of them turned off before
long.

There were also two and three wheeled vehicles out enjoying the Trace in
Tennessee.

Overnight, I had decided that I would continue on the Trace to its end,
and this might be the main reason. When I started thinking about driving
the Natchez Trace Parkway on my way home, this was about the first thing I
thought of. Last night I finally figured out that it is a lot closer to
the north end than to the south. Because of this and what's two panels
down, I decided that a full length run was the way to go.
I did pop into the cabin to look over the displays and refresh my memories, but the Meriwether Lewis tombstone was my real target. There is a lot to think about here. The accomplishments of the young man buried here are phenomenal. His premature death is a tragedy and a mystery. Thomas Jefferson's words are inscribed on the memorial. They are not words taken from some Jefferson document on government or science. They are words that Jefferson said about his personal friend. This place is unique. The man buried here is a hero. |

I've driven as far as the Birdsong Bridge from Nashville a couple of times
so I know I'm close when I'm crossing it. That last picture marks my
second full-length completely dry drive of the Parkway. I've gotten wet
while driving portions but I'm 2 for 2 when doing the whole thing. 888
rain free miles.

At one point, I thought of grabbing a motel and finishing the Trace in the
morning then celebrating with a Loveless breakfast. But there are no
motels close to the Trace so the end was just about as close as a bed. I
decided to finish it off today and celebrate with a Loveless dinner as I
did in 2006. I was set to order catfish when the waitress told me the
day's special was chicken and dumplings. She then sold me on their special
version of creamed corn. Even though I didn't come close to finishing all
of anything (except the biscuits;-), I'm sure a whole lot of the five
pounds I gained this trip is on this table.
