The original Jefferson Highway Association could not agree on a single
path between Kansas City and Joplin so they accepted one on each side of
the KS-MO border. When I drove from Winnipeg to New Orleans in 2018, I
went through Missouri. This year's conference being held near the southern
end of the Kansas route, provided the perfect opportunity for driving the
other side.
The first picture was taken on Grand Boulevard a little south of the
split. Kansas City street cars are identical to Cincinnati's. The
Cincinnati system is still struggling for acceptance while KC's is
expanding. I snapped pictures of both an outdoor and indoor theater before
leaving city traffic.

The big city was finally left behind. The Hillsdale Tavern was not yet
open for the day when I passed but, reassured that it's not as expensive
as it looks, I'm sure I would have enjoyed a stop there. The brick
pavement is in Paola.

What might be the longest stretch of brick pavement on the JH goes past
the Osawatomie State Hospital.

John Brown Memorial Park is just a few blocks off of the Jefferson
Highway in Osawatomie. Somewhere along the way, my camera's automatic
focus got switched off and that starts to become apparent (in the results,
not to the operator) here. I'm calling this my "soft focus" period.

The bridge is right at the south edge of Osawatomie. About sixteen miles
of scenic driving followed then I came to a wet spot in the road. I
studied the height of the water on the roadside grass and felt I had
sufficient clearance but I also remembered warnings about driving where
the road surface can't be seen. I also considered that this was a fairly
isolated and completely unfamiliar spot and did the prudent thing and
turned around. After a short detour, I did get a photograph of the other
side.

Two and a half bridges around Fort Scott. The first one is actually in
Fort Scott and the other two about eight miles south nearer Garland. All
three are complete and functional. It was the cameraman's aim that missed
part of a bridge.

|
I snapped a couple of pictures in Pittsburg as I passed through. I will
return shortly. The mascot of Pittsburg State University is a gorilla --
the only one in the country -- and the city is heavily populated with
them. The La Quinta is the conference's headquarters and where I will be
staying.
|
|
The two routes reconnect less than twenty-five miles south of Pittsburg
although the drive there is a bit longer. Near Carl Junction, I got lucky
and caught a Kansas City Southern train crossing the Jefferson Highway.
The last picture is of the last block before the two routes rejoin at 4th
Street in Joplin.

|
I took a more direct route back to Pittsburg where I reconnected with a
bunch of JH fans I haven't seen in three years and headed to a reception
at the Crawford County Historical Museum. In addition to
munching and chatting, we were able to check out the museum exhibits.
Computers are cool and all but sticky notes are
clearly one of the most useful technical developments of our age.

On the way back to the motel, we stopped for a nighttime shot of a sign
we would eat under in a couple of days.
