Trip Home

I stayed at another chain motel last night but did find an independent restaurant for breakfast. The Merry-Go-Round has been in operation since 1946. I wouldn't normally add a cinnamon roll to bacon & eggs but my waitress told me they were freshly baked and only a dollar.

I mentioned yesterday that I was picking up IN-62 at the state line. It would carry me for nearly all of my miles in Indiana. Many years ago, Car and Driver magazine included it in a list of ten favorite driving roads. Based on that, I used it for the title and part of the route of a 2007 day trip. If memory serves, they picked the section between Corydon and Dale for their list. The first picture was taken about a half-dozen miles east of Dale as I drove toward Corydon. The next one was taken about ten miles farther east. The third picture was taken fifteen or so miles beyond that as the road approaches the Little Blue River.

There is always a good view at the well named Overlook Restaurant. The restaurant was open -- and busy -- but not the pub. Even so, I hung around long enough to make sure the barge made it safely through the big turn.

I found liquid refreshment at nearby Stephenson's General Store which sells about everything you might need including groceries.

The most famous store in the town of Corydon, at the other end of the Car and Driver touted road segment, is Butt Drugs. It's a full service pharmacy, now run by the third generation of the Butt family, and not afraid to take advantage of the humor most folks find in the name. I entered the store and headed straight to the soda fountain. On my first visit in 2014, I'd ordered and very much enjoyed my go-to root beer float but was told that malts were a speciality. I was back for a malt in 2015 but the store was closed on the day I was there. Maybe I misunderstood or maybe the store has switched to touting shakes rather than malts. If so, I'd guess that it's because it sounds funnier. They are made with hand-dipped real ice cream which would probably be obvious if you could hear that Hamilton-Beach churning away at the thick mixture. Yep, it's really good and it made my FB/IG/Twitter post of the day.

I've surely driven by Polly's Freeze before but I have no memory of it. I don't know if I actually missed it or forgot it. Either is hard to believe. After taking my pictures, I wanted to buy something but that Butt shake was barely a dozen miles behind me. I settled on a small yogurt cone.

I pulled onto I-64 less than a mile later and stayed on expressways all the way home and that naturally results in another picture of downtown Cincinnati magically appearing from around that curve. Home is just a few more curves away.
