It might not have been 100% spontaneous, but it was close. I knew about The Long Players' Saturday show some time ago and was interested. I learned about the Cleverlys' Thursday show a couple of days ago and I was interested in that, too. About Tuesday, I started thinking that the combination might justify a trip to Nashville. On Wednesday, I went to bed thinking I just might do it. It still seemed like a good idea when I woke up Thursday, so I threw some clean underwear in the duffle and hit the road.

Not long after I'd slipped through Cincinnati and over the river, I realized that the northbound traffic was at a standstill. I later learned that a 4:00 AM accident still had things jammed up. It was after 9:30 when I drove by the long lines of semis. Near Pendleton, Kentucky, construction squeezed southbound traffic into a single lane, and things briefly came to a halt. After that it was clear sailing all the way.

To avoid a blank spot on this page, I took drive-by shots of Kentucky's free range dinosaurs, the Corvette assembly plant, and the Corvette museum.

I'd booked a motel before leaving home, but had not done any real scheduling By the time I reached the Tennessee line, it became apparent that I would reach Nashville way ahead of check-in time. More or less naturally, the first time killer I thought of was Broadway and honky tonk hopping. Then I had a better idea.

The lunch crowd was near its peak when I reached Thomas Drugs but I still found a seat on one of the red swivel stools where I could savor a hand-dipped root beer float. Next to me, a lady and her nine year old granddaughter were finishing their sandwiches. Between them, possibly as incentive, sat a great looking banana split. When the sandwiches were gone they commenced on the split. Small bags of chips had come with the sandwiches and the girl had saved some of hers. It had never occurred to me to use salty potato chips to dip into ice cream, and her grandmother passed on the suggestion, but she certainly enjoyed it.

The venues for both shows I would be attending were new to me so, once I reached Nashville, I did drive-bys just to have some idea of what and where they were. Then I checked in to the motel and relaxed a bit before driving to the first venue with enough time to walk to the nearby Yazoo Brewery to do a little tasting.

With very few exceptions, all shows at Station Inn are strictly first-come first(only)-seated with no advance ticket sales. After driving nearly 300 miles, I sure didn't want to miss out and checked out things at the Inn well ahead of the scheduled opening time. No line had yet formed so I felt safe walking to Yazoo. There were still a few minutes to go when I returned and took my place in the short line that had appeared while I was gone. I'd been overly cautious but no regrets. I don't know that they ever actually got to the point of turning people away but the place was definitely full by show time.

I've tried to recall where and how I first heard of The Cleverys but that's a memory that has been lost to time. It was at least several years ago, and the group's makeup has changed a bit since I first started watching for a chance to see them live. This is a family band just like the Ramones. Digger Cleverly, Ricky Lloyd Cleverly, Cub Cleverly, Dale Vernon Dale Cleverly, and Sock Cleverly are all first rate bluegrass musicians just like Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. They do some great original songs but they are best know for doing popular hit songs just like the cover band at your neighborhood pub. All of that ridiculous description is completely true with one exception. They do indeed cover songs from artists like Beck, Katy Perry, and Black Eyed Peas, but it's not much like the neighborhood cover band. If you find it difficult to imagine a bluegrass version of Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart", look it up on YouTube. There's a recent performance with the current lineup here.
