Yes, Rutherford Hayes was born where a BP
station now stands. There is a more fitting monument at the next corner of
which I grabbed a less fitting drive-by shot.

On a smooth stretch of US-36 near Ostrander, OH, I spotted something on
the road just in front of my car. I swerved enough to miss it with the
front wheels but not enough to clear the rears. Or maybe my passing pushed
it sideways. I heard a thud then a series of them. Maybe a half mile
later, I pulled into a Shell station with this.
For the first time ever, I pushed the SOS button for the Subaru Starlink system I've been paying for but never used. It worked wonderfully. I was instantly in contact with an operator who immediately asked if I was in a safe location. Being assured that I was, she then asked for details about my situation. Actually, she mostly verified things -- such as location -- that she already knew. Travis arrived in a very reasonable amount of time, and quickly had my cute little donut spare mounted. While on the way, he had been in touch via text and voice to keep me informed of his ETA, etc. |

I entered the little market at the station a couple of times while I
waited and noticed this by the door which led me to
this.

I also called my car dealer while I waited and learned that, while I had
insurance and warranties on just about everything else, I did not have
road hazard coverage on the tires. So then I made a call to the nearest
Subaru dealer (Byers) and verified that they had the needed tire in
stock. They were ready for me after my slow drive there and had the new
tire installed in a very reasonable amount of time. They also -- after
asking -- washed the car.

Things had been resolved quickly enough that it was technically possible
for me to finish the trip as planned if I didn't stop too much. I had
earlier written it off and, after considering it briefly, decided to just
include the remaining bit in Part 2 in October. The decision may have been
made easier by the discovery that there was a brewery a couple of miles
away. I celebrated the completion of Part 1 of my NOTR and PPOO trip with
some very tasty salmon and stout.
