My stay in Las Vegas, NM, was not where I thought it would be. Allan
Affeldt, who restored La Posada in Winslow, AZ, has also restored both the
Plaza and Castaneda
Hotels in Las Vegas. The web presence of all three is somewhat
combined and rooms at the two Las Vegas properties can be booked from the
same page. I could blame that for thinking I had booked the Castaneda when
I had actually booked the Plaza but the rooms are clearly marked and it
was my lack of attention that is to blame. There was an upside to the
error in that the restaurant at Castaneda is closed on Mondays and the one
at the Plaza is not.
And it was my confusion about time zones and closing times that resulted
in my not taking any photos of the hotel last night. So I grabbed a few
early morning shots today and am including a view of
my room that I did take last night. It had a
real key.

I also snagged pictures of the Castaneda and the train station next door
before leaving town.

I had two reasons for pulling into the town of Wagon Mound. One was the
song with that name by Michael J. Ronstadt. The other was the POI labeled
"NOTRb" in my GPS. I actually did add a note to this one but all
it says is "Santa Fe Trail" which is not very informative. My
best guess is that the NOTR once ran through Wagon Mound on this street.

In La Junta, I stopped to visit a cousin who lives less than a hundred
yards from the NOTR. That's me on the left, Cousin Jane in the middle, and
her husband Don on the right. In addition to sharing some great memories
and family updates, I was treated to a fine lunch and a tour of the town
and points nearby. Then I drove off with this wonderful homemade almond
brittle.

I ended the day in Lamar, after photographing the Colorado Madonna and her
