The breakfast spread at the Midland had a Czech lean and a coffee machine
that was so deceptively simple that I had to ask another guest for help.
She explained it without embarrassing me then asked how I liked my
bierock. That it was seen as useful to include the word "cold"
in the tag for the plate of rather plain looking rolls should have tipped
me off to the fact that they weren't all that plain. "They're stuffed
with things like ground beef," she told me so I cut mine open before
taking a picture and before I bit into a surprise. Rather tasty and,
although I may not make bierocks part of my breakfast every day, I
won't run from them either.

I parked in front of the hotel overnight and returned to the car this
morning to discover that I had been "mooed". This was afirst
for me and, although it definitely seems harmless enough, I don't yet know
enough to say whether I'm in, out, or indifferent.

Of course, a town with the World's Largest Czech Egg is sure to have a few
smaller eggs around too. That last picture is of the other side of the big
egg with the hotel in the background.

When I came across this map-on-a-rock about three miles east of Canton,
KS, I did not really consider the wide range of possibilities in the word
"Local" and immediately set off on what would turn out to be a
35 mile long side trip. The drive stair-stepped along property lines and
was likely never part of the National Old Trails Road and definitely was
not part of its 1925 route. The mostly unpaved route of the local tour did
cross the path of the Santa Fe Trail in many places and several key points
on the trail were marked.
Here is a mostly unreadable view of the sign at
French Frank's Trail Segment. What might be a
predecessor of the D.A.R. trail markers stands across the road from
the cluster of signs at Cottonwood Crossing. At Lost Spring Station, I got
both readable and not so
readable sign photos.

I reached Council Grove in plenty of time to photograph the Madonna
there. And I got the unique panels too.
This was the Madonna of the Trail that completed my first visits to all
twelve in 2016.

I did not reach Council Grove in time to get a room at the motel where I
stayed in 2016. It was completely book but I found
this room at the
Cottage
House. It was in the rather plain looking addition but these photos
are of the historic older areas.
