From a survey in the motel parking lot, I now know that 8 out of 10 birds
prefer Shell over Dairy Queen. After tucking away that bit of knowledge, I
drove north to McClean, picked up US-136, and headed east.

|
|
A few miles west of Indiana, US-136 turns south for about a dozen miles
before turning back to the east in Danville, IL. Near the midpoint of that
stretch, this truly impressive pumpkin stands by a cheese shop with
limited hours of operation.

|
This bit of US-136 was once part of the Dixie Highway. I drove this
section northbound in 2015 in the last phase of clinching the DH. The
Custard Cup looks much like it did when I stopped
in 2015 although the name
Jarling is no longer on the cone part of the sign. There is still a
Jarling Custard Cup in Champaign so I'm guessing this one has been sold
and is now independent although I've not verified that. I did verify that
their Almond Joy Snowstorm is delicious.

|
US-136 ends just east of the big I-465 circle in Speedway, IN.

|
About a mile past the end of US-136, I turned south to reach the
Mug-n-Bun. In
hindsight, I probably knew that the Mug-n-Bun pork
tenderloin was a fritter but forgot. No problem. It's still a fun
place to eat.
From there. I drove straight to the nearest I-465 entrance and high tailed it home as quickly as traffic would allow. |
