June 5, First Day of JHA Conference Trip

While checking out of the hotel, we asked about breakfast restaurants and got a rousing recommendation for a spot just a couple of miles away. Avanti's was full when we arrived but we were told there were just two parties ahead of us and the wait would be a short. It sure was. Before we had time to step outside to join the other folks waiting for a table, we were asked if we wanted the two open seats at the counter. We did and I got this. Very tasty and reasonably priced.

We knew nothing about Schaefer's Auto Art until a fellow we were chatting with at last night's banquet mentioned planning to make a visit. There's lots of good stuff here. Although it is powered by three big V8s, that rocket only has seating for one. The bumble bee probably has enough work just getting itself off the ground and the passenger capacity of the airplane/helicopter is unclear.

The guy who told us about Schaefer's did not know about the PennDOT Road Sign Sculpture Garden so we both benefited from the conversation. We parked in a lot across the street and were content to take pictures from the other side of the busy highway. We didn't get any pictures of the sign garden on the corner while stopped but I did grab one while driving past.

It seemed impossible to turn left from our sign garden viewing spot but turning right was quite alright as we did our turnaround beneath the Plaza Lanes sign we had already spotted. From the bowling alley lot, we could walk to the adjacent Bean's Auto Repair. Bean's is very much an active business with something of a museum happening inside. Gasoline is no longer sold here but it was when the price rose above a dollar a gallon and older pumps were set to measure half gallons with appropriate signage.

Hank's Frozen Custard has been waiting for me since 1952 and I's certainly glad of it. Check out those classic Electro Freeze machines. My Chocolate Mint topping on vanilla custard was delicious.

Our plan was to follow the current US-6 into Iowa and it was nice to see Historic US 6 signs along the way.

We ended our day in Huron, Ohio, on the banks of the Huron River just a few hundred yards from Lake Erie. Dinner was right next door to the motel and I actually thought of eating outside by the river but it was entirely too chilly for that.

There is no pause at home between this trip and one to a Jefferson Highway Association Conference in Iowa. I have separated the otherwise independent trips between the two travel days with no involvement with either conference.
