Day 4
Driving to the Circus
|
There was plenty to see on the way to the circus. I revisited a literary
park, visited a Trail of Tears site for the first time, stopped in a
town that is taking care of itself, and had a 'burger I've waited seven
years for.
This day had fancy bathrooms, an over-sized guitar, a right-sized
Parthenon, an iconic meat and 3, and more.
The day ended with the promised Walk Through the Neon Canyon but it was
preceded by visits to museums, motels, signs, etc.
Day one got me to Nashville and a really cool reception at a really cool
museum.
Well, that didn't last long. A few days ago my name popped off the top of
the SCA conference waiting list and I've put it back on my schedule.
Adjustment to plans for the NOTR and PPOO trip
that had replaced it have also been made.
Guess not. The dates and site for the 2024 SCA conference were announced
in July 2023 and registration opened on January 28, 2024. In between, I
posted my intent to attend in Prelude 1. SCA conferences are rather pricey
(but worth it) and I had April's Jefferson Highway conference and June's
Lincoln Highway conference to attend and pay for ahead of the SCA event.
With the event happening more that seven months after registration opened
and nearly three months after the LHA conference, I figured I had plenty
of time and decided to be a little gentle on the cash flow. I was just a
little too gentle. It was announced on June 1 that the conference was
full. I quickly put my name on a waiting list but I have the impression
that quite a few others did the same so don't have high hopes. As things
stand now, I will not be attending the 2024 SCA conference.
As with the Lincoln Highway Association conference in Indiana, long
distance travel is not a consideration for attending this year's Society
for Commercial Archeology conference. Bearing the name "A Walk
Through Nashville’s Neon Canyon", it will take place September 20-22
in the capital of that state just two border crossings south of me. That's
close enough to have been visited by me several times in the past but I
know I'll learn something new about it from the SCA folks. Heck, I don't
think I've ever thought of calling the neon lit Broadway a canyon before
so there's that already.
