The morning view along Rocky Point Road south of Malabar.

At Sebastion, I had to wait for a train to reach Old Dixie Highway on the other side of the tracks and running right beside them.

The Stuart Arch was six years in the future when Granddad and Granny passed through here.

The name remains the same at the north edge of Riviera Beach, but inside the town the former Old Dixie Highway bears the name of the former president. At no time was the entire Dixie Highway, or any other named auto trail, officially designated by name in all of the jurisdictions it passed through so renamings such as this don't really alter the overall picture very much. Plus they don't, of course, alter the actual route of the historic highway one inch. Residents of Riviera Beach did not make the change on a whim but because of specific painful memories. I regret this and other name changes involving the route only because they can promote the misconception that "Dixie" is an evil word and the Dixie Highway an evil route.

This is my cousin Kerri and aunt Jean in Kerri's "back yard". Apparently Jean took to Florida much more than her grandparents did a hundred years ago because once she got there she stayed. Her children are lifelong Floridians.

I had abandoned the slow following of my ancestors along narrow back roads in order to reach the meeting with my aunt on time. I continued using the direct method in reaching the day's prearranged destination. In the weeks before I started this trip, USA Today ran a contest to select a Best Roadside Motel. It was one of those vote-once-a-day affairs, which means it was more of a traffic generator than an actual poll, and I have no idea how the candidates were selected. The motel that got my votes (all two of them) placed second and Vagabond placed sixth. The full results are here.

The first picture is of the hotel's sign and entrance. The dolphin sculpture (You did see the dolphins, didn't you?) is on the building's northwest corner. The third picture is the view just outside my room and the fourth is a view inside. A more varied look is here.

Pictures of the Vagabond sign paired with its more famous neighbor are popular but not as popular as pictures of the neighbor alone except for her dog.
