Last night I was kind of tired and inexplicably unhungry. Surrounded by interesting sounding restaurants, I hung out at the motel with a granola bar and some almonds. This morning I was ready for breakfast at Jimmy's Eastside Diner just a couple blocks away.

The lack of traffic on this Sunday morning allowed me to cross the street for a straight on shot of the Coppertone sign. Yesterday's traffic made a street crossing nearly impossible.

I had skipped over the final portion of the southbound part of my planned route so this morning I set out to drive it in reverse. I encountered what looked like a fairly major cycling event on the was to my chosen starting point.

I snapped drive-by shots of the "Pillar of History" on the Brickell Avenue Bridge and Freedom Tower as I headed north. Granny would not have seen either of these as the bridge opened in 1929 (with the column added in 1995) and the tower opened in 1925. In addition, I have little reason to think my route at this point has much in common with what Frank drove in 1920.

A wrong turn got me off the planned route and onto Griffing Avenue beside the Biscayne Canal but the trees there were so gnarly I just had to include them.

I was soon back on course and back on the Dixie Highway. Routes are often split onto a pair of one way streets through towns, and sometimes the part I would like to be on isn't going my way. Such was the case in Hollywood where the Dixie Highway signed alignment was southbound on the other side of the railroad tracks.

Even though I did a rotten job of recreating the scene, you may be able to tell that this is the same spot I photographed in 2008.

After reaching the point where I had gone into express mode yesterday, I picked up the northbound route I had originally planned. It includes this stretch of Old Dixie Highway near Saint Lucie that I had not driven southbound because it is more difficult to reach from the southbound lanes of US-1. I would not drive it all the way today, either. I encountered the "UNDER WATER" sign about five miles in. After watching the Jeep plow through, I believed I could make it but still did the prudent thing and turned around. Being old and being bold don't always go together.
