I once again got quick confirmation that I was starting the day on the right road. |
|
I stayed with the Yellowstone Trail until it was as close as it was ever
going to get to the location of my morning appointment, then moved to a
direct route. The appointment was with Alice and John Ridge, organizers of
the Yellowstone Trail Association. The couple have been
working on the definitive Yellowstone Trail book and I have been in
contact with them about it since I thought I might pull this trip off last
year. In July, John sent me a preliminary version of one of the chapters
to look over and comment on. I would have enjoyed taking the book on its
first cross-country ride but that was not to be. The book was not quite
finalized when I picked a departure date. My stop today was to be a
"Hello while I'm in the neighborhood" sort of thing.
It was definitely that and more. We swapped travel stories and talked about old roads in general and the Yellowstone Trail in particular. We could have easily kept it up for hours. I took a picture of the Ridges and Alice took a picture of John and me for use in the Yellowstone Trail Association newsletter, the Arrow. I asked her to take another one with my camera. That picture also shows a surprise the Ridges had for me. The book is in its final form and the printer will have copies within weeks. That won't help me on this trip but that folder on the table will. It contains the most recent "annotated" versions of the book's chapters from Wisconsin west. I won't have time to read much of the background or colorful sidebars, but I will have access to tons of information including points of interest that I would otherwise be unaware of. It is a wonderful travel gift and very much appreciated. |

Within a few miles of leaving the Ridges, I was back on my plotted course and getting confirmation from roadside. I took what I found in Monomonie to be another positive sign. It's the third Norge globe of the trip and it looks to be totally original. |
|
I dodged the orange barrels and slipped into Saint Paul, MN. At some point
I realized that Mickey's Dining Car ought to be somewhere nearby then
figured out where. It's going to take more than being closed and a block
off of my route to keep me from taking a picture. Mickey's is another
diner that I'm hoping really is only temporarily closed.
I made it past the capitol with few problems but things got tougher. Street closures and detours kept me from driving all of my intended route, but I did eventually make it through town and to a motel on the other side of Minneapolis. |
|
I found dinner at a restaurant in a nearby ritzier motel. It being an Irish pub, I thought of bangers & mash but that wasn't a choice. The grilled salmon salad was an excellent substitute, however. If you look beyond the salad, you will see they are offering single malt scotch on a bed of flavored seltzer. |
