On Friday, I eliminated certain regret by backtracking, and eliminated early evening panic by booking a motel for the night very early in the day. I picked Spokane, WA, as a reasonable target, and it worked out fine. However, by the time I got there, other considerations had appeared. I had been exchanging emails with a friend who lives in Washington, and he made me aware of the heat wave that had started but was going to get much worse. He suggested that, if I had a place to stay with good air conditioning, I might want to hunker down and delay entering Seattle until the worst of it was over. That made sense so I arranged for three more nights where I was staying. I ended up moving on after just two nights but on this day I did laundry and left the motel twice. The first was for breakfast at Frank's.

Unlike the many diners that look like railroad cars but aren't, Frank's Diner really did start life on the rail. It was converted to a diner in 1931 after serving as the personal car of the president of the Northern Pacific Railroad for twenty some years. My meal was delicious (and huge), the service excellent, and the whole experience just really cool.


My second outing was for dinner but I left the motel without a restaurant in mind. I did have a brewery in mind (the closest of several in Spokane) and figured I would pick a dining location while sipping. The brewery that geography chose was Lumberbeard Brewing. They make an excellent stout which was extra excellent with nitro.

I did pick my dinner location while sipping -- and looking out the window. I could see Dick's Hamburgers right across the street and it looked like my kind of place. They've been serving 'burgers since 1965. It's the sort of place where you order at the counter then take your food to a table, your car, or home. Although a lot of customers were opting for car or home, enough remained to fill the few shaded seats. The sun drenched table and mid-90s temperature complemented the meal perfectly.
