Out of necessity, this trip begins with an expressway, but west of Indianapolis I slipped off of it by a few miles for breakfast at the Oasis Diner in Plainfield, IN.

Then I made one stop in Illinois.

Before crossing into Missouri.

In St. Louis, I again made a short departure from the interstate for a familiar treat. The first picture was taken just seconds after the frozen custard wa handed to me. Yes, the custard is out of focus in the second picture but it was melting so fast that it would have looked much the same if it was in focus. The temperature was about 98 F.

This is my first time staying at the Wagon Wheel since the Dinkelas became its owners. The place is clearly in good hands. All rooms at the historic motel are fairly small by modern standards, but my room is officially labeled "compact"e;. A good choice for the budget minded solo traveler.
