I had wanted to stay in Holbrook last night primarily because there was a side trip I hoped to do from there. After coffee with Jim (a good idea for a podcast name BTW), I now had two side trips on my potential agenda. From Flagstaff, I booked the next night at a non-Wigwam motel in Holbrook with the idea that I could combine the short drive to Holbrook with the two side trips then make the longish approximately 300 mile drive to Albuquerque the following day.

Around 5:30 AM, I heard what sounded like hail outside and opened the door to instantly see why it sounded like that. I snapped a couple of pictures but the small scale pellets can only be seen in the one flash picture I which happened to be of the neighbor's car. When it came time to leave, I thought I took some pictures of the snow on the ground but the only visual evidence of it I have is of the windshield from inside the car. This cold and wet does not bode well for my side trips.

There were people standin' on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, bundled up and trying to stay dry. Erroneously believing there was a brewery in Winslow (They're still working on permits or some such.), I circled back and discovered a Peter Toth carving just one block over. On my second pass through the intersection, I got a snapshot of the corner with statues and a flatbed Ford but no people. I did a drive-by at La Posada, stopped briefly at the Remembrance Garden, then turned back to do a drive-by of the already filled Winslow motel I tried for last night.

The side trip that information from Jim Hinckley had triggered was to a bridge south of Winslow. I now headed there. I came upon the water flowing across the road about two miles after passing those yellow signs. I stopped and got out of the car to study the situation. I was soon convinced that crossing this particular wet spot would not be a problem but I turned back anyway. I had no idea what the road ahead was like and those yellow signs were fresh in my mind. The biggest factor, though was the threatening sky. More rain seemed likely and it did start falling on the way back to Winslow. Getting to the bridge did not mean I could get back. I turned around and photographed a reminder that I was in open range country instead.

This, of course, is the motel that I wanted to stay at in Holbrook.

And this is the one where I did stay. My room at Brad's Desert Inn was behind door number 17.
