I spent the night in Boonville and went a little off course when leaving
town to visit Boone's Lick State Historic Site. In 2007, I walked to the
lick but slipped on the way and broke the camera I was carrying. Since
then, I've developed an aversion to anything with a "steep
grade" label so I still have no photos of it,

The beginning of the Santa Fe Trail and the end of Boone's Lick Road are
marked in New Franklin, MO. Perhaps the relative size of the markers
reflects the relative size of the trails they mark. The tears have made
the Santa Fe plaque rather hard to read. The

In 2007, a small stone wheel lay on top of the Boone's Lick Road marker. Today it lays broken beside the markers. |

I picked up some of the old road, signed Old Rocheport Road, east of
Rocheport.

I was almost as surprised by the the Crane building today as I was in
2007. Unfortunately, they are closed on Sunday. In 2007, Marlene Crane,
who apparently left us in 2016, was on hand to give me a tour of the
museum. I fear that museum is now gone.
Crane's
Country Store appears to be operating normally but Marlene's
Restaurant has a limited menu and hours and
the museum space is
for lease. Glad to see some of those chairs I remember are still there.

The D.A.R. erected quite a few markers for both the Santa Fe Trail and
Boone's Lick Road. I photographed several of them but have not posted many
photos. This Boone's Lick Road marker gets some attention by doing extra
duty as a pumpkin stand.
