A respectable number of conference attendees gathered for breakfast
followed by a much smaller group gathering at
Cahokia Mounds.
Some folks may have been scared off by the threat of continuing rain and I
was pretty much ready to bolt myself but there was no rain at all at the
mounds. Dr. Angela Cooper gave us an overview of the site at the scale
model then provided much more information during a walk around some of
the mounds. I climbed the 100 foot tall Monks Mound twenty years ago and
feared we might attempt that today but fortunately our tour was totally on
the level. Here are slightly more readable versions of the
Cahokia and
Grand Plaza signs.
When I climbed into the car at the end of our tour, I set the GPS to "fastest route" and pressed "home" for the first time in just over a month. |
