As promised, I returned to the
2400
Diner this morning and had a fine
breakfast. It's small and operating at reduced
capacity which led to the guy who walked in while I returned to my car for
the mask I forgot taking the last seat. The wait was short, however. I
doubt it was that short for the eight or so people waiting when I left.

Granddad and Granny didn't see Mount Vernon because they didn't want to
wait for it to open. I didn't see it because I'd been there once and
didn't want to spend the time doing it again. I got a picture, though. I
also got a couple pictures of the Potomac. Granddad and Granny must have
driven right beside it but there is no mention of it in the letters. Maybe
after spending all that time by the ocean in Florida, they were just
unimpressed.

My visit to Washington didn't go exactly as planned. I had hoped to
briefly stop at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as we had in 2001, but at
noon on a 60° Saturday parking was non-existent. I ended up
duplicating the 1921 visit more closely than expected. An exception is
that I did not stop at Arlington but merely drove by the entrance. But,
like Frank and Gertrude, I drove past the Lincoln Memorial (which was not
yet complete when they saw it), and the White House (which was much more
visible when they saw it), then decided that it "was such a jam"
(surely worse than what they saw) that I too was "glad to get out of
town".

I think that when Fredericksburg first came up, I had this place,
Frederick, in mind. It's on the National Road and I've stopped here
before. It has a really nice park built around a canal. I briefly thought
of stopping but the nice weather made it just as busy as Washington had
been. I read their Thanksgiving themed message and kept on moving.
