PEGGS, in downtown South Bend, was an excellent spot for the last breakfast of the trip. |
When I picked up my planned route just a couple of blocks away, I discovered that US-20 is sharing a path with the Michigan Road, the Lincoln Highway, and bus route #4. |
This sizable gathering was near Shipshewana, IN. Most of the parked vehicles were horse-drawn and black which made the green John Deere tractor and yellow Gehl track loader easy to spot. There were also a few cars, but they were carefully segregated off to the side. What I believe were some new buggies waiting for power plants to be installed stood a little beyond, and a little beyond that was a field containing several used buggies, a few wagons, and a single boat waiting for new owners or full disintegration. |
Forty miles later I was in Ohio, and twenty miles after that I was at the point where I started east on US-20 thirty-six days ago. I still had about 160 miles of Ohio to cover before I was home, but the great center-to-coast-to-coast-to-center adventure was effectively over. |
I am of the opinion that 245.8 miles per day is a pretty good road trip pace. |
