I just posted the journal for the first day of a trip that will take me out of Ohio heading east on US-20 and see me return on US-20 from the west. In between, I intend to get to the west coast by following the Yellowstone Trail from one end to the other. The eastern portions of the trip will be through semi-familiar territory and the two routes even overlap quite a bit. West of Illinois, the two paths separate from each other as well as from places I have been.
This entry is to let blog only subscribers know about the trip and to provide a place for comments. The journal is here.
Denny, will you be taking US 20 back west, or…? Would love to be able to meet you along the way…missed you coming east thru NYS. I am in Olean, south of Buffalo….tied up until Saturday..let me know
I’ll actually be heading west on the Yellowstone Trail but that doesn’t differ a whole lot from US-20 in that area. I’m sure it will be at least Saturday before I get near Buffalo. The next two days will determine a lot.
Naked Dove brewery, just e of Canandaigua, Tom Wahl’s Avon.
Both great choices. Right on my route. We now watch how the timing plays out.
Saturday or Sunday would be good for me…Canandaigua would be good for me…have to check Naked dove hours or another brewery I may not have thought of
Sunday looks feasible. Let’s move the rest of the planning to FB Messenger if that’s OK.
Glad to hear you finally took my advice and got a dog to travel with..{ You probably should have washed your clothes, too.)
I might not really have a dog but Carol Ruth e-mailed me that she’s using my name for her next cat so I have that going for me.
There was a 19th century road that went from Lower Sandusky (now Fremont) to Perrysburg. They put up mile markers along the way. There is one on the corner in Woodville, and a Zero Mile Marker park in Perrysburg. Some of the markers are original. Others were put up 30+ years ago by the Woodville Historical Society. I did an inventory and took pictures of all these some years ago and had them on a website, which is no longer up.
Very interesting. I hadn’t thought about any of them being reproductions but now that I have, the C-B marker and the one in the lot are in surprisingly good shape.
Check your Facebook Messages. I left you two pics from my defunct 2005 website page on the Maumee and Western Reserve Turnpike.
Got ’em. Thanks.
I have actually been on that Old Trails Road, several years ago when I was wandering about on the LH and US 6….I wondered about its history then but do not remember seeing any other signs or markers.
BTW, I could name a new cat Gibson but that would bring up past martini memories!
There are certainly other reasons for the word “trail” being used but the fact that the YT actually followed that path seems to give it an edge.
Some memory gaps are beneficial. Best not to mess with them.
We have added the GPS coordinates to the picture of the Marvin rock in “the book” to make it easier for others to find! Thanks, John
Nothing like last minute changes. 🙂 Hope the coordinates are helpful.
US-12 goes right through Spring Grove, Illinois, where I live. It is on my list of roads I want to go on from-end-to-end. Glad to see you’ve been on it way out there. We’ve never been west of Wisconsin on it.
It’s western terminus was originally Miles City in Montana, and was considered a gateway to Yellowstone Nat. Park.
Without looking it up, do you know the present eastern and western termini of 12?
What’s now marked as US 12 in Michigan is actually old US 112. US 12 in Michigan was decommissioned when I-94 was finished, and US 112 was renamed as US 12. You can still drive Old U2 12 in Michigan.
I was going to guess Detroit in the east but Russell has that sorted already. No idea about the west.
A quick reference to highway endpoints is:

The long and strange history of the routing of US12 needs be found elsewhere.
That Klown Doll Museum looks like it might have started out as a Sinclair Station.
I bet you’re right. I thought it looked like a repurposed something.
Wow! What a trip……so cool, enjoyed the photos and tracing your adventures. great to meet you at Naked Dove and enjoy their craft beers.
Put your feet up for awhile…you have earned it.
So glad you enjoyed tagging and tippling along with me. Unaudited stats indicate that the Naked Dove was the 7th of 36 breweries visited. Relaxing I am.
Another one of your massive trips completed. Congratulations.
Looking forward to your next trip.
Great meeting you in Marengo last weekend.
Have a Cincy Chili to celebrate.
Don Hatch
Thanks. I entered Ohio craving a 4-way but hit Cincinnati just as Burger Week started. Like I needed another ‘burger after that beauty in Marengo. Anyway, the chili has been on hold but it will happen soon.
