The first order of the day was catching a ferry. That's something that
being even a little late for can ruin your day. I had about an hour drive
to reach it, so I waited until I was almost there for breakfast. Then it
was a western omelet at
Arena's.

There are two US Numbered Highways that incorporate ferries. One is US-10,
which I drove last year. The other is
US-9, which I'm driving today. The ferry's website is
here.
A few drops of rain fell as I waited in line, but it was dry by the time I drove on board. As we left the Delaware shore and headed for New Jersey, most of the passengers moved inside. Many of us did not. |

From the ferry's stern, those of us who stayed outside could watch the
flock of seagulls (No, not that
Flock of
Seagulls.) that chased after the boat.

I saw no US highway shield at either terminal, but caught this one soon
after reaching New Jersey.

Lucy the
Elephant is considered America’s oldest surviving roadside attraction.
That I had not seen her was somewhat embarrassing. I headed directly there
when I exited the ferry. I arrived just a few minutes ahead of a tour. I
rushed across the street to get a ticket and returned in time for the
guide's introduction and to climb up one of the legs to the interior. The
first displayed photo is actually one of the last I took after seeing Lucy
from the inside. A pair of the photos show Lucy's eyes and the view from
one of them. The last picture shows the steps descending Lucy's right-hind
leg. Of course, the steps in the other hind leg, which we entered on, are
just as narrow.

Wildwood, NJ, is my home for the night. On the way to my motel, I snapped
these pictures of a few of the city's many eye-catching signs and
buildings.

I'm staying at the Sand Box Motel. It's a few blocks from the beach but
is clearly rather popular. The last picture is the view from ny room. The
view of my room is here.

I recognized Cape May as a place where
Don Evans often
plays. I know of Don from his days with one of my favorite
should-have-been-a-star singer-songwriters
Dirk Hamilton. My
stay lined up with a gig at
The Brown Room. I was there for most of the first set
and drank one beer. When the set ended, I spoke briefly with Don, finished
my beer, and headed for the motel. It was a long day.

On the way to my bed, I took these handheld shots with the camera on
automatic. This place could be a lot of fun with a tripod and some energy.
